Kapunahou
This mele speaks of a mystical spring whose fresh water quenched the once parched land in Manoa during a terrible drought. Punahou School now stands where this spring was said to have flowed. According to music historian Kimo Alama Keaulana this song dates to the end of the 19th century. Performed in the key of G, then it modulates to A.
Aia I Kapunahou
Wai a`o Kane loa
A he loa ka helena
Ka pilina i ka pono
A he pono kaulike
For you a me ia`u
Ua pono no `oe
Neia pua `oleana
Hele wale `ohu`ohu
Nei lei pikake
Ha`ina ka puana
Wai a`o Kane loa
There at Kapunahou
Is the water of the great god Kane
The journey was long
To be rightfully together
A fairness to be shared alike
For you and I
You're doing alright
(with) This Oleaner Flower
Going about all decked out
(with) This lei of jasmine
The story is told
The water of the great god Kane |
