Ha`ena I Ka `Ehukai
Composer Kamaka Kukona wrote this song after he and members of Halau Hula Kukalehuaika`ohu made a pilgrimage to Kaua`i's historical hula sites. It honors his kumu hula Mae Klein and her lineage through the eminent teachers Maiki Aiu Lake and Lokalia Montgomery. Performed in the key of G, modulate to A.
Kamaka is a classmate of Gonzo and Kale, and is also a Kumu Hula.
Aia i ka nani a`o Limahuli
Kau aku na maka i Makana
He makana ``o Ha`ena i ka `ehukai
Kai honehone `o Ke`e
`ike aku i ka luna a`o Hanalei
Halau i ka nini a ka ua loku
Lu`ulu`u e ka liko, hiki Wai`oli
O ka waialoha no ia
He mana`o ho`olale i ka pu`uwai
Aloha Mokihana, pua o Kaua`i
Wili `ia me ka maile lauli`ili`i
Lei ho`oheno i ka poli
A he poli pumehana wehi mau `ia
`O Kaua`i hemolele i ka malie
Ha`ina `ia mai ana ka puana
`O Ha`ena i ka `ehukai
There in the beauty of Limahuli
let the eyes behold Makana
Ha`ena is a gift in the sprays of the sea
Sweet whispering sea of Ke`e
Gazing towards the heights of Hanalei
Long dance hall in the pelting, torrential rain
Suppressed is the bud, Wai`oli comes
It is indeed the water of love
A thought quickens the heart
Beloved Mokihana, flower of Kaua`i
Entwined with the small leaf maile
Cherished adornment of my bosom
A cherished bosom of constant adornment
Kaua`i, so perfect in the calm
Thus ends the story
Of Ha`ena in the sprays of the sea
